What happens in a civil court case that is presented for a non-oral hearing for motion to default?

we were deceived and taken advantage of by a construction company. We paid for the work but it was not finished by this co. We had to hire a lawyer and sue for amount that we had to pay another company to finish the job.What happens in a civil court case that is presented for a non-oral hearing for motion to default?
The court is going to consider a motion for a default judgment.
